Intent

Okay.

2007 is the year.

It is the year I will attempt my first half-iron distance triathlon.

For those of you who do not know, a half-iron consists of a 1.2 mile open water swim, 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run.

Now which one?

I would like to do the GulfMan mainly because it is close to where I live, I have friends who would be willing to do it with me (Sarah says she is in) and it is early in the season. I am just hoping that it takes place this year. Last year the previous organizers were basically kicked out and they brought in new organizers at the last minute. Lots of confusion, so who knows what will happen this year.

My number one choice for a half-iron (right now, anyway) is The Grand Columbian Triathlon, but that is later in the season so it will have to wait. Maybe I could sign up for it anyway. We'll see.

One of these days I would even like to attempt a full Ironman. One of my friends (Liz – 14:52:55) completed Ironman Arizona this past April and another (Consuela – 12:45:30) completed the Quelle Challenge Roth this past July.

My first choice for a full is Ironman Coeur d'Alene, but by the time I am ready to sign up for one – who knows what I will choose.

Anyway, that is my intent. I figured if I put it out there in blogland I couldn't renig.

Wish me luck!!

Why don't you wait until next October and do IronStar? I did it 3 years ago, and it's a nice venue, well-organized, and all sorts of other good things. You could volunteer at this year's race and get a feel for it.

Fine! You can stop twisting my arm now. I get it. I'll do my first HIM in 2007. Happy? Good. Now stop with the peer pressure.

Geez!

Just finished the half at grand columbian last night. It's a beautiful race, very well supported, and was a lot of fun. But it's very bike-focused (which I'm not), including a super-hard hill within the first 10 minutes, lots of rollers, and a long, long climb around mile 30.
But I'm going to work on my hill climbing and do it again next year!

Hey Clare - thanks for the comment. I am not that bike focused either, but it still sounds like a great race!

Bunnygirl - I have contacted Ironstar about volunteering. Not sure if that will be the one I do, but you never know!

I want to do a 1/2 Ironman in 2007 also. If not Gulfman, I will likely wait for IronStar... I was there last year doing photos and loved the atmosphere. I'd volunteer this year but I'll be out of town that weekend.

Hey Jill, I am with you and Sarah on the Gulfman! Should be great. Than also looking at the Ironstar or a new one in Austin called The Longhorn Tri, well see if it comes around. I also like Coeur d'Alene as a First Full IM but will probably do IMAZ and IMMOO in 2008, planning that is.

In looking around yesterday, I came across the Lone Star Tri in Galveston -- on April 1. Perhaps a reworked version of Gulfman? I don't know. But I'm thinking of setting my sights on that one. I'm already planning to run the Half in January so the April time frame would fit in well with my current training...not to mention Houston weather.... ;)
